TLDR:
Lincoln Cathedral is illuminating its iconic facade in the colours of the Lincolnshire flag on October 1st to mark both Lincolnshire Day and the flag’s 20th anniversary. Lincolnshire is celebrating in style as Lincoln Cathedral lights up in striking yellow, green, blue, and red from dusk until 10pm on October 1st, recognising Lincolnshire Day as well as marking the 20th anniversary of the Lincolnshire county flag.

Lincolnshire Day, observed annually, commemorates the region’s rich heritage, community spirit, and centuries-old traditions. This year, the county’s celebrations take on special significance, honouring the flag designed in 2005 by Michelle Andrews following a public vote. Michelle, now part of the Lincoln Cathedral team, reflected on the flag’s journey: “The idea behind the flag was to shine a light on Lincolnshire. Despite being one of the largest counties, Lincolnshire is often described as a ‘hidden gem,’ but this is an amazing place, full of amazing people.”

A Flag Full of Meaning

The Lincolnshire flag’s colours each represent key elements of the county:

  • Blue: Lincolnshire’s famous wide skies and coastline.
  • Green: The lush farmland that contributes to Britain’s food production.
  • Red cross: Symbolic of St George, representing Lincoln and connecting county to country.
  • Gold fleur-de-lis: The Lincoln symbol and a nod to local heritage, as well as the Virgin Mary—patron of Lincoln Cathedral.
  • Gold band: Alludes to the nickname “Yellowbellies” for those born in Lincolnshire.

Michelle Andrews explained, “Lincolnshire has such a rich and diverse heritage, from its role as Bomber County during the Second World War, to its vital role in agriculture and food production, and its growing reputation as a world-class tourist destination, there’s so much to celebrate.” She added that seeing the county flag’s colours lighting up the cathedral “is the pinnacle” of its journey.
