Lincolnshire chippies named one of the best in UK
A number of fish and chip businesses in Lincolnshire are among the UK’s best in the National Fish and Chip Awards. The shortlist for the annual awards has been announced, and businesses in Louth, Spalding and Market Deeping are among the finalists. Linfords Traditional Fish and Chips in Market Deeping is one of ten restaurants across the UK that is in the running for the 2026 ‘Restaurant of the Year’ title. It will be going against No1 Cromer in Norfolk, The Cod’s Scallops in Nottingham and several other takeaways in Yorkshire, Somerset, London, Bristol and Devon. Andrew Crook, president of the National Federation of Fish Friers, said: “Small businesses are the lifeblood of the UK high street, and they provide the kind of opportunity, variety and individuality that boosts economies and brings us all together, and we are taking this opportunity to champion this year’s standout restaurants.” He added: “The shortlisted 10 are making long-lasting contributions to uphold the great British institution of fish and chips, whether it’s with a traditional take or elevated to fine dining status. Sitting down at the table with family or friends to enjoy a fantastic meal is where memories are made and it’s wonderful to see these restaurants creating shared experiences across multi-generations with great precision. “I have a feeling that Restaurant of Year is going to be a tough one to separate the winner – all the best to our contenders.” Also up for an award is Amy Crombleholme of Hunters Fish and Chips in Louth and Kieran Bulpit of Donington Fish and Chips in Spalding. Amy and Kieran are among the 14 fish fryers competing for the competition’s 2026 Drywite Young Fish Frier of the Year title. This award saw a 50 per cent increase in applications this year, and those on the shortlist will be put through a multi-stage performance review which includes a live, online cookery demonstration with on-the-spot questioning, interviews and in-person assessments. Kelvin Lee, managing director of Drywite Ltd, says the competition stands alone in its field for those in the early stages of their fish frying years. He said: “We are very pleased with the number and quality of entrants for the 2026 Drywite Young Fish Frier of the Year award. “I feel this proves that young people are really keen to demonstrate their skills and make fish frying their career and not just a job. The 14 candidates short-listed have already proved they have a special talent, and I wish them all the very best as the competition progresses.”
